The 2026 AI mega-rounds, by the numbers
OpenAI and Anthropic raised $217B between them this year. Here are the 15 biggest rounds for AI labs and compute, who led them and what they paid.
2026 is the year AI funding stopped being measured in billions and started being measured in hundreds of billions. Crunchbase counts $679B of global venture funding in the first three quarters, and three rounds for two companies make up about a third of it.
This post covers the largest rounds for frontier labs and AI compute from January 1 to October 12, 2026. "Reportedly" marks rounds known from press reports or filings rather than a company announcement.

Two AI-adjacent rounds belong in the same league: Waymo raised $16B at $126B in February, and Databricks raised $5B at $190B in August.
Two labs took most of it
OpenAI and Anthropic raised $217B between them in three rounds. Against Crunchbase's $679B for the year so far, that is about 32% of all venture money worldwide, for two companies.
Anthropic's path is the steepest on record. It was valued at $183B after its Series F, $380B after the Series G in February and $965B after the Series H in May: 2.5x in about fifteen weeks. OpenAI's round grew from $110B announced in February to $122B committed by March 31, with about $3B coming from retail investors through bank channels.
The suppliers are the investors
Much of this money comes from the companies the labs buy from:
- In OpenAI's round, Amazon committed up to $50B and Nvidia $30B, and Microsoft took part.
- Anthropic's Series H includes $15B committed earlier by hyperscalers, $5B of it from Amazon.
- Nvidia shows up in xAI, SSI, Mistral, Nscale, Together AI, Ineffable, AMI Labs and Reflection.
- AMD invested in Cerebras, Samsung led Mistral's round, and Dell, Nokia and Lenovo backed Nscale.
The labs say they will spend much of what they raise on compute, so a good share of the capital goes straight back to the investors who supplied it.
Governments are at the table
State money is in most of the big rounds. Abu Dhabi's MGX is in OpenAI, Anthropic's Series G, xAI and Databricks. Singapore's GIC co-led Anthropic's Series G and co-led the Series H. Qatar's QIA is in xAI, Aramco Ventures led Together AI, Luxembourg is in Mistral, and the UK's Sovereign AI Fund and British Business Bank are in Ineffable Intelligence. Mistral's round was widely framed as a bet on European "sovereign AI".
Billion-dollar seed rounds
Two labs with no product raised more than $1B at seed. David Silver's Ineffable Intelligence in London raised $1.1B at $5.1B, described as Europe's largest seed round. Yann LeCun's AMI Labs in Paris raised $1.03B at $3.5B to build world models. Both rounds were priced on the founders' track records, not revenue.
Compute is growing fast, from a smaller base
The dedicated compute companies on the list (Nscale, Crusoe, Cerebras and Together AI) raised about $6.8B combined, small next to the labs. Their valuations still moved fast: Cerebras went from $8.1B to about $23B in four months, Crusoe from over $10B to about $30B (reportedly), and Together AI from $3.3B to $8.3B. Together AI's round is why we moved it from Assess to Trial on the AI Platforms radar in the October 11 edition.
The shape of the year
Per Crunchbase, AI took 80% of venture funding in Q1 ($242B of a record $300B quarter). In Q3 that fell to 64% ($102B of $159B) because no single round reached tens of billions. Billion-dollar rounds kept climbing, though: 14 in Q1, 16 in Q2 and 27 in Q3. The money is spreading from a few labs to many companies.
Still in talks
Several large rounds were reported but had not closed as of October 12:
- Thinking Machines Lab: at least $1B at $40B or more, per The Information.
- Cohere: $2–3B at about $20B, which Cohere described only as a "Series E process".
- Lambda: up to $4B at $14.5B pre-money, per the WSJ.
- Perplexity: Nvidia investment at more than $30B, per The Information.
We'll update the table as these close.
